On a rainy October weekend we traveled with 8 friends to Bordeaux, France to celebrate Lindsey's 30th birthday in style. We stayed in a huge Chateau with a fireplace and rustic decor in the heart of the east bank of Bordeaux. It was super fun because we were with all our Amsterdam peeps plus Chris and Lindsey's parents came to enjoy the celebrating as well. On top of that, we got to experience St. Emilion; the oldest wine area of the Bordeaux region.
Saint Emilion wines are considered robust, generous and reach their maturity quicker than other reds. Our french tour guide at Château Vray Croix de Gay (who's Great Great Grandmother started the wine house) taught us to appreciate the tradition of the wine making process and to taste with all our senses.
The decor in the Chateau was perfectly arranged and made us feel right at home.
We were completely surrounded by the vineyards. We had no choice but to immerse ourselves in the tradition of the wine making process.
One of the activities we participated in really enhanced our education of the wine. We mixed Merlot and Cabernet Franc to make the perfect ratio for each of our tastes. Based on our favorite mix, we bottled and labeled our own wine.
Somehow I ended up with everyone's empty wine glasses in front of me. Like the picture shows, it looks like a compromising situation.
Our last day in town was spent in the small town of St. Emilion. I wish we could have spent more time there, but I guess it gives us a good reason to return.
